Gates of the Head Center in Human Design

The Head Center is located at the very top of the bodygraph. It is a pressure center that creates inspiration and the pressure to answer the questions. That pressure moves down into the Ajna, where it can be sharpened into concepts.

This center, which has only three gates, covers a wide range of what it feels like to have a busy mind. Confusion, mystery, and doubt are three themes of the same underlying pressure to make sense of things.

The pressure of the Head Center, despite how intense it can feel, is not an instruction to act. The mind is built for measuring, thinking, and teaching. It was never built to make decisions for us. That is what Strategy and Authority are for. 

Each of the three Head Center gates has different themes. 

Gate 63, Doubt -  the pressure to question a pattern before trusting it. This gate's energy is about weighing what has worked before against whether it will hold up in the future, and the doubt it raises is not a flaw so much as a built-in check before a pattern is relied upon.

Gate 61, Mystery - the pressure to know something that cannot be fully explained. This gate carries a pull toward life’s deeper questions, and its knowing tends to arrive suddenly, as a spontaneous flash, ahead of any step-by-step reasoning.

Gate 64, Confusion - the pressure to make sense of the past. This gate holds a flood of mental images and impressions from earlier experience, jumbled together out of order, and it takes real time to sort them into anything that resembles a clear picture.

 When the Head Center is open

An open Head Center is common, and it does not mean a still mind. It means the pressure you feel is not a fixed, personal pattern, but something you tend to pick up and amplify from other people and from the ideas circulating around you. You may find yourself deeply gripped by a question that, on reflection, was never really yours to answer. The useful practice is noticing when a pressing thought belongs to the room and not to you, and letting it pass through.
