Human Design Fears of the Ajna

Updated: 2 hours ago

The Spleen speaks once and falls silent. The mind is another matter. The fears of the Ajna keep talking, turning a worry over and over long after the moment that set it off has passed. These are the anxieties of the mind, and they have a different texture from the body’s survival fears.

The Ajna is the awareness center of the mind. Its fears are anxieties, mental fears about ideas, opinions, and meaning. The mind can produce a fear where there is nothing real to fear at all, which is part of what makes these anxieties so convincing and so tiring to live with.

The anxieties of the mind

Anxiety in the Ajna is fear turned into thought. The mind takes a situation and runs it forward into everything that could go wrong, building a case out of possibilities that have not happened. It is built to think and to form ideas about the world from a distance, and it does that well. The same power that lets it consider every angle also lets it generate fear on its own, without any signal from the body that something is wrong.

The six fears of the Ajna

Ra Uru Hu taught six anxieties carried by the gates of the Ajna. Each one is a particular worry the mind returns to.

Gate 17, Anxiety over Challenge - the opinion-holder’s worry that its view will be challenged and found short on detail.

Gate 43, Anxiety over Rejection - the individual insight that fears being dismissed, and the person behind it who feels like an outsider.

Gate 11, Anxiety over Darkness - the maker of ideas who fears that hope will run out and no light will come.

Gate 24, Anxiety over Ignorance - the fear of not knowing, and the deeper fear that others will not be ready to know.

Gate 47, Anxiety over Futility - the fear that experience was pointless and the past held no meaning.

Gate 4, Anxiety over Chaos - the fear that there is no order, and the pressure to produce an answer to settle it.

The mind is not where correct decisions live

One piece changes how all of these fears sit. The mind holds no Authority of its own. It is here to think, to consider, and to offer ideas to the world, and it does that beautifully. What it cannot do reliably is tell you what is correct for you. Your body holds that guidance, through your Authority. Once you understand that your decisions are not made from the mind, its anxieties lose their grip. They are still there, still talking, and they no longer have to be obeyed.

Lived through your Strategy and Authority, the mind becomes what it works best as, a source of ideas and perspective offered outward to other people. Its anxieties do not vanish as sensations. They stop running the show.

I notice the difference most on the days when my mind is loud. It has an opinion about everything, including the things it has no way of knowing. For a long time I mistook that noise for guidance and let it steer me. What I am learning, slowly, is to let the mind think as much as it likes and to look elsewhere in myself when it is time to decide.
