Human Design Gate 23, the Gate of Assimilation

Many thinkers carry insights that arrive whole, and the hardest part is finding words for them that other people can follow. They may explain something they understand completely and meet only blank faces around the table, then hear the same thought praised a month later when someone else says it. In Human Design this experience has a mechanical source, and one of the places it can be traced is Gate 23 in the Throat.

The Gate of Assimilation

Gate 23 is the Gate of Assimilation. It takes its image from Hexagram 23 of the I Ching, Splitting Apart (Bō, 剝), the image of a structure worn down until only what is essential remains.

Splitting Apart is a fitting picture for this gate. The 23 sits in the Throat, the center of expression and manifestation, and belongs to the Knowing circuit of Individual circuitry. It carries a pull toward stripping an insight down to its core, so that something individual and new can be put into words other people are able to take in. Expression from the 23 tends to be precise and economical, and it carries the potential to change how people think, which is also why it so easily meets resistance.

Gate 23 is one of eleven gates in the Throat. I've written about all eleven together in Gates of the Throat Center in Human Design, and about the center itself in The Throat Center: Expression, Communication, and Action.

23 - 43 Channel of Structuring

Across from Gate 23 sits Gate 43 in the Ajna, the Gate of Insight. Together they form the Channel of Structuring, a design of individuality, running from genius to freak. The 43 carries sudden inner knowing, and the 23 gives that knowing a voice, so the channel turns private insight into language. Whether that language lands as genius or sounds strange depends largely on timing, and on whether the listener was open to hearing it in the first place.

When both gates are defined, insight and expression work as one consistent process, and learning when to share becomes part of living the design. With the 23 alone, the voice for individual insight is present and the insight itself comes and goes through other people who carry the 43 or through transits. In that configuration a person may put other people's breakthroughs into words with great clarity while doubting whether they have anything of their own to say.

Gate 23 in an ordinary day

In daily life the 23 tends to show up in moments of explanation. Someone with this gate may watch a meeting go in circles and then offer one plain sentence that clears the whole problem. On a different day, the same kind of sentence offered to a room with no interest can be met with puzzled looks, or passed over entirely.

The idea is often the same on both days, and what changes is whether anyone in the room was ready to hear it. Many people with the 23 come to find that their words carry further when someone has asked for them.

The six lines of Gate 23

Each line colours the gate in its own way, and the 6-line reference in my 64 Gates of Human Design Flash Cards covers every gate line by line.
