The 6/2 Profile in Human Design: Role Model / Hermit

When you look at your chart, you will find a pair of numbers such as 6/2. That pair is your Profile. Each number comes from a line of the I Ching, the first from your Personality and the second from your Design, and together they describe the role you tend to play in life and with other people. The 6/2, known as the Role Model / Hermit, is one of twelve possible combinations.
For the full picture of how Profiles work and all twelve combinations, see Human Design Profiles and the Six Lines Beneath Them.
A Role Model on the conscious side
Lines 1 to 3 belong to the inward, personal side of life, and Lines 4 to 6 face outward toward other people. The 6/2 pairs Line 6 from the outward side with Line 2 from the inward side. Line 6 belongs to the Personality, the conscious side, so a 6/2 tends to recognize the Role Model process in themselves and can feel each phase of life as it arrives. Line 2 belongs to the Design, the body-based side beneath awareness, and it carries a natural pull toward solitude.
In the 3/6 and the 4/6, Line 6 sits on the Design side and its phases tend to be noticed by other people first. In the 6/2, the phases sit closer to the person’s own awareness, and the Hermit nature of Line 2 makes stepping back feel natural to them.

Line 6, the Role Model
A person with Line 6 moves through life in three phases. The first phase, from birth to around thirty, tends to look like a Line 3 life, full of experimenting and learning through direct experience. The second phase, from around thirty to around fifty, is often described as stepping up onto the roof. The person becomes more aloof and watches life from a distance as an objective observer. The third phase, from around fifty, is the return to the ground, where the person can re-engage with life and live what they have come to see as correct.
Line 6 also carries a quality of optimism and high standards. A person with Line 6 hopes to see things work as they should, and early experience tends to show them that life often falls short of that hope. This discovery is part of what draws them up onto the roof.
Line 2, the Hermit
Line 2 carries a quality of natural talent and a need for time alone. A person with Line 2 is often skilled at things without knowing how, and they tend to be content letting others look after themselves while they follow their own interests. The word Hermit describes this.
Line 2 is also linked to the call. Other people notice what a person with Line 2 has to offer and call them out of their solitude to share it. In a 6/2, Line 2 sits on the Design side, so the pull toward withdrawal runs beneath awareness, and stepping back during the second phase tends to come easily.
How the 6/2 combination shows up in daily life
A 6/2 tends to be noticed, even during the years of watching from a distance. People sense that they are being observed by someone with a clear view, and they come to a 6/2 for objective advice or to confirm their own thinking. Many 6/2 people become a sounding board for the people around them, and others often treat them as a reliable authority. The call in this Profile tends to come as a request for their judgment or their leadership.
A 6/2 carries two views of people at once. The conscious side is optimistic and hopes for the best in others and in life. Beneath awareness, they carry a clear sense of how fragile people can be. Over time, many 6/2 people move between warmth toward others and a cooler distance. They can connect widely with communities and still keep some personal distance from the people in them.
Leadership is a central question for this Profile. A 6/2 can guide others well, and a natural separation from the people they guide comes with that role. Their life comes to completion when they step down from the roof and join in the efforts of others, living out what they have recognized as right.
Knowing about the three phases will not spare a 6/2 the hard lessons of the early years or the pull toward aloofness in mid-life, since both belong to the pattern. It can help them see each phase for what it is. Around fifty, the long habit of observing without taking part can be hard to leave behind, and this is often the point where life opens up most for them. When a 6/2 lives by their Strategy and Authority, the return to involvement tends to happen on its own.
The 6/2 in relationships
Relationships are often the most demanding part of life for a 6/2. A person with this Profile is an idealist in love, hoping to find a partner and a bond they can fully trust. In the first phase they tend to throw themselves into relationships in search of the right person, and the disappointments of those years can leave a lasting mark.
Mutual trust nourishes a 6/2. When they come to see a relationship as untrustworthy, they tend to withdraw from closeness. If someone breaks their trust, they may stay friendly on the surface and still never let that person close again.
A partner who offers steadiness and consistency over time gives a 6/2 the ground they need to trust. Their search for the right work and the right people continues through life, and the bonds that last tend to be the ones where trust has had time to prove itself.
