Human Design Gate 59, the Gate of Sexuality
Updated: Oct 26

Most people know someone who seems to get close to others without effort. A stranger at a dinner party ends up telling them something personal within the first hour, and colleagues who keep everyone else at a distance relax around them. In Human Design this capacity to break through barriers and create intimacy is traced to Gate 59, which sits in the Sacral center.
The Gate of Sexuality
Gate 59 is the Gate of Sexuality, also known by its hexagram name, Dispersion. Its image comes from Hexagram 59 of the I Ching, Dispersion (Huàn, 渙), wind moving over water and scattering the ice, so that what was frozen apart can flow together again.
Gate 59 sits in the Sacral center, the motor of life force and work, and belongs to the Defense circuit of Tribal circuitry. This small circuit is concerned with bonding and the continuation of the family line. Gate 59 carries the generative energy to break down barriers between people, and its aura reaches toward others in a way that is often felt before anything is said. Sexuality is the most obvious form this takes, and its reach goes further, into friendship and any other bond where real closeness becomes possible.
Gate 59 is one of nine gates in the Sacral center. I've written about all nine together in Gates of the Sacral Center in Human Design, and about the center itself in The Sacral Center in Human Design. The same center also holds Gate 3, the Gate of Ordering and Gate 34, the Gate of Power.
59-6 Channel of Mating
Across from Gate 59 sits Gate 6 in the Solar Plexus, the Gate of Friction. Together they form the Channel of Mating, a design focused on reproduction. Gate 59 brings the generative pull to come close, and Gate 6 decides whether the barrier between two people opens. I've written about the other side of this channel in Gate 6, the Gate of Friction. This channel holds some of the most powerful bonding energy in the chart, and people often feel its presence strongly, whether or not anything romantic is involved.
Because Gate 6 belongs to the Solar Plexus, the whole channel follows the emotional wave. The pull of Gate 59 may be constant, while the opening of Gate 6 comes and goes, so clarity about who to let in tends to arrive with time.
With Gate 59 alone, the generative pull is present while the emotional decision of Gate 6 comes through other people or through transits. In that configuration, a person may find that their reach toward others meets very different responses, warm with some people and guarded with others, depending on the emotional state of the person they approach.
Gate 59 in everyday life
In daily life, Gate 59 often shows up as an ease with closeness. A person with this gate may join a new team and within a few weeks be the one others come to with their worries, without ever having set out to be. People tend to open up around them, and their presence can soften a tense room.
The way Gate 59 reaches toward others varies a great deal from person to person, and the six lines describe very different styles, from shy and slow to direct and immediate. What they share is the Sacral quality of the energy. It works best in response, so the bonds that last tend to be the ones a person with Gate 59 responded to fully.
The lines of Gate 59
Each line shapes how Gate 59 reaches toward others, and the 6-line reference in my 64 Gates of Human Design Flash Cards covers every gate line by line.
