Human Design Gates of Fear

Updated: 10 hours ago

No one is free of fear. It belongs to being human, and every one of us carries some form of it. What Human Design offers is a way to understand fear as part of your awareness, a working piece of how you sense the world. Read that way, fear becomes something to recognize and understand, and it stops being an enemy to fight.

In the chart, fear does not come from one place. It has three homes, each with its own flavour, and knowing which kind you carry is the beginning of making peace with it.

Fear is a byproduct of awareness

Fear arrives with awareness. To be aware of the world is to be aware that it is uncertain, that things can go wrong, that the future is not guaranteed. A creature with no awareness has no fear, and no defence either. So the same faculty that lets us perceive and understand also opens the door to fear. This is worth holding onto, because it means fear is not a sign that something is broken in you. It is a sign that you are awake to your life.

Three centers, three kinds of fear

There are three awareness centers in Human Design, and each one produces fear in its own register.

The Spleen is the body’s oldest awareness, the seat of instinct and survival. Its fear is physical and immediate, and it speaks in the present moment about what is here now. These are the basic fears that keep a body safe, and because the Spleen speaks once and then lets go, what it tells you can be trusted. I write about these in Human Design Fears of the Spleen.

The Ajna is the mind. Its fear is anxiety, a worry that runs on thought, turning a situation over and building a case out of what might happen. The mind can manufacture fear where nothing is wrong, which is part of why it holds no Authority of its own. I write about these in Human Design Fears of the Ajna.

The Solar Plexus is the emotional center, and its fear comes as nervousness that moves in waves. A worry can feel enormous at the top of the wave and small at the bottom, so this fear is the least reliable in the moment and asks to be met with patience over time. I write about these in Human Design Fears of the Solar Plexus.

Fear as a form of intelligence

The turn, in all of this, is that fear does not have to be removed to be lived well. Lived through your own Strategy and Authority, each of these fears settles into a kind of intelligence. The Spleen’s fear turns into alertness, a body that reads real danger well. In the mind, the same energy becomes clear thinking and ideas worth offering to others. And the emotional wave, given time, turns its nervousness into a depth of feeling that can be trusted once it has run its course.

When these fears are lived from the not-self, they wear a person down, since every anxiety gets treated as a threat and every mood as the truth of the moment. Lived through your own design, the same fears make you more awake and more responsive to your actual life. The fear itself remains as a sensation in the body. What changes is your relationship to it.

As a Splenic Projector, fear has been a long teacher for me. For years I treated every flicker of it as a problem to solve, and I wore myself out trying. What Human Design gave me was permission to let fear be what it is, a part of my awareness doing its work, and to stop reading every instance of it as a verdict on my life. The fear still comes. I am on far better terms with it than I used to be.
