Human Design Gate 55, the Gate of Spirit

A morning can feel full for no particular reason, and by evening the same life can look empty, with nothing outside having changed. Moods like these are hard to explain to anyone who has not lived them, since they arrive without a cause and leave the same way. In Human Design this play of fullness and emptiness is traced to Gate 55, which sits in the Solar Plexus.

The Gate of Spirit

Gate 55 is the Gate of Spirit, also known by its hexagram name, Abundance. Its image comes from Hexagram 55 of the I Ching, Abundance (Fēng, 豐), the sun at its height at noon, a fullness that holds within it the knowledge that the light will begin to wane.

Gate 55 sits in the Solar Plexus, the center of emotions and the emotional wave, and belongs to the Knowing circuit of Individual circuitry. Its moods are individual and melancholic, and they move on their own timing, so the same cup can look half full one week and half empty the next. Gate 55 carries the potential for abundance as an inner state, and its sense of fullness or lack has little to do with what is happening outside. Each gate in the Solar Plexus carries its own fear, and for Gate 55 it is the fear of emptiness. In Human Design, Gate 55 is also linked to the mutation of the Solar Plexus, the slow shift toward emotional awareness that is expected to unfold across the coming generations.

Gate 55 is one of seven gates in the Solar Plexus. I've written about all seven in Human Design Fears of the Solar Plexus, and about the center itself in The Emotional Center in Human Design.

55-39 Channel of Emoting

Across from Gate 55 sits Gate 39 in the Root, the Gate of Provocation. Together they form the Channel of Emoting, a design of moodiness. Gate 39 carries the pressure to provoke spirit, a restless push that tests whether there is real feeling present in a person or a situation. Gate 55 receives that pressure as mood, and the mood becomes the ground from which creativity and spirit can rise. Melancholy has a place in this channel, and many artists and musicians who carry it find that their most lasting work comes out of the low points of the wave.

Because Gate 55 belongs to the Solar Plexus, the moods follow the emotional wave and pass in their own time. A low mood here rarely needs fixing or explaining. It tends to move on once it has been felt, and clarity about any decision made during it usually arrives later.

When both gates are defined, the provocation and the moods work together as a consistent theme, and a person may find themselves stirring up feeling in others almost without trying. With Gate 55 alone, the capacity for spirit and mood is present while the provoking pressure of Gate 39 comes through other people or through transits. In that configuration, a person may notice that certain people bring their moods to the surface quickly, sometimes before they are aware of feeling anything at all.

Gate 55 in everyday life

In daily life, Gate 55 often shows up as a shift in how life looks while the circumstances stay the same. A person with this gate may sit down to the same breakfast in the same kitchen two days in a row and feel rich in one and hollow in the other. Friends may ask what happened, and the honest answer is usually that nothing did. Understanding this tends to bring relief, since the mood can be allowed to pass without a story being built around it.

Many people with Gate 55 find that their moods carry a creative charge. A melancholy afternoon may be the one in which a song gets written or a painting takes shape, and they learn to give those hours room. Abundance, for Gate 55, grows out of meeting both the full days and the empty ones with the same openness.
